On 9 July, 2009, the UN General Assembly officially endorsed by consensus the outcome of the World Conference on the Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development (New York, 24 to 26 June, 2009). This Outcome Document thereby paves the way for the follow‐up of this historic conference, which acknowledges the challenge faced by Member States “to ensure that actions and responses to the crisis are commensurate with its scale, depth and urgency, adequately financed, promptly implemented and appropriately coordinated internationally.”

On 23 July, 2009 at the Palais De Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, representatives from Civil Society along with Governments will meet to assess and critique the outcomes of the Conference in light of the urgent challenges faced by developing countries impacted by the crisis, and suggest how “the Way Forward” in Paragraphs 51‐59 of the Outcome Document can engage the international community in coordinated and coherent responses, and in the unique inclusive platform provided by the United Nations.  They will also assess the progress to date with the establishment of this mechanism, and stimulate an interactive dialogue on the rationale for such a mechanism, and how it can contribute to the quest for enduring solutions to overcome the global financial and economic crisis, and mitigate its negative impacts on development.
